All the trivets I make are cut from American Walnut wood. I do this because of heat. If you should happen to scorch the trivet it will be less noticeable with the darkness of Walnut rather than a lighter color wood. Of course, since it is associated with food the finish is simple and non-allergic mineral oil. It should be noted that occasionally the trivet should be re-wiped in fresh mineral oil since it will dry out because of the heat. I designed this myself.
